The article's about Duolingo. Mainly about whether Duolingo's sending aggressive notifications leading it to getting pageviews (engagement in today's parlance) can be replicated by other apps sending aggressive notifications too in a sick zero sum game of garnering your attention.

Interesting — I have used Duolingo but didn't turn on notifications, same as for pretty much every app I install. Also, I think they allow you to "freeze" your streak now in case you're going to be traveling or off-grid. That takes away some of the urgency of keeping your streak going by using the app every day.
